BoilerMaker 15K Road race. July 11, 2010
Hi,
I'm from Utica, New York, home of the Boilermaker 15k road race that happens Buy Viagra Professional Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed every year in July for the last 33 years. People from all over the country and the world, come and run as well as thousands of local runners. The race keeps getting bigger and bigger every year and it's a favorite event amoung the residents of Utica. A record number of runners signed up for the Boilermaker, exceeding 13,000, with over 11,500 finishing the 15K race. At the end of the race it was Lelisa Desisa, 20 of Ethiopia, who emerged victorious, with a field best of 42:46, breaking the mens record of 42:54 set by Joseph Kimani in 1997. Way to go girl!
There are many volunteers that help and people line the streets cheering the runners on and encouraging the stragglers. Some of the volunteers have been doing it since day one. The event really brings the community together and is a great financial boost for the shop owners, restaurants, hotels and other businesses.
Professional runners from Kenya that go around the country racing for prize money usually win. I think it's somewhere around $10,000 for winning the race.
If you're a runner, this should be one of your goals to run in the Boilermaker Roadrace in Utica, New York.
Here's a quick video on the race.

Hi Steve, I have a friend in her 60′s and last year she ran her first marathon. She undertook the Great Northern Run and did it in really good time too. She was training for a couple of years before hand. And of course our very own John McNally is an avid marathon runner! I wonder if he has tried yours??
Enjoy the journey.

Hi Steve Just come to visit your blog. Just reading your post here about the race and I think I have to agree some of these Kenyans are usually very good. We have a similar race in Sydney and it was last weekend. It is called City to Surf and just over 80,000 started. It’s lots of fun. This year we did not see any of the runners from Kenya figure prominently.
A little about me – I am a student of Mark Terrell and actually going through the course a second time – by invitation. I love it and know if I do all he says I will be right out in front. I am Australian but the US is my second home as I have family there and visit quite often.
Well I hope you are doing well and you become very successful. I would love you to come visit my blog.
Kind regards
Sue

Hi Steve
New York in the summer time. I hear that it is very hot there at the moment and people are swimming in dumpsters. Hope it was cooler for all these runners.
Yes I am Mark Terrell and I am following my students. I am passionate about getting them ready to be able to make some money online exactly the same as I am doing. It is not really difficult as long as they are willing to put in the effort.
Keep up the good work.

Hi Steve,
I am not afraid to admit, this is the 1st time I heard of the [Boilermaker 15k road race]
Only been to New York City once like 7 years ago for a week and love every single day I spend there. There’s so many different, interesting and meaningful things to do there. Guess this is one of them.
Perhaps I should pay a visit to Utica next time round

Hi Steve, Running is one of the cheapest sports to start and events like this are fantastic for inspiring people to have a go.
Not only that but the revenue it can bring to smaller communities is a great help to them all, especially in today’s difficult times. I also think that every community can do with some added spirit.
Best of luck for the 100 blog comment challenge, it’s great to see Dave’s students getting involved. Best of luck with your ventures Steve.
If you’re on twitter could you let me have your twitter name and i’ll add you to my twitter list for the challenge.
Best of luck, Barry
Hi Steve
It sounds like a great event and the local businesses will surely be grateful for the extra business it brings their way during these financially difficult times. Something similar would certainly give my town a much needed boost.
Best Wishes

Hi Steve,

Hi Steve,
Marathon running, or rather training for a marathon requires very careful planning and preperation. Like starting an internet business.
Here in The UK we have a comedian called Eddie Izard. Eddie took it upon himself to run a full marathon everyday for 51 days. He did this for comic relief, he succeded and achieved his goal. And raised a couple of million in the process.

Hi Steve…cool name
Great to have you on board.
In the UK the London Marathon and the Great North Run always inspire thousands of people to run and it does help raise awareness and much needed funds for lots of charities.
I wish you well with the challenge.
Take it easy
cheers
Steve
He must have been in terrific shape. How in the worl can someone run 26 mile a day for 51 days? I’d be dead after the first marathon. Raising the 2 mil was a good insentive I suppose. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Steve,
I read youir blog about the “smarter” goal setting and I really like that concept. Easy to understand and impliment. Very good. I plan on using that format to plan goals in my internet business. Thanks for sharing. I also would like to take up golf when I have more free time. Maybe we can play a round together some day.
Cheers,
Steve
Hey Steve, this may be a stupid question but why is the race called the Boiler maker Road race?
These community marathons are a great way to engage people from all walks of life.Cant imagine running in them for a living. Here in OZ we have the City to Surf that’s run on a similar basis to raise money for charity.
I would like to add your race to my bucket list. Many Thanks

Hi Stan,
Thanks for asking about the race. Here is a little bit of Histry for you.
The Boilermaker 15K Road Race was established in 1976 by Earle C. Reed. Reed was looking for a way to give back to the community that had supported his family’s business, Utica Companies (ECR International, formerly Utica Boilers) The race began with just over 800 runners and a budget of $750. Now in its 30th year, the Boilermaker is the largest 15K in the Nation with almost 11,000 runners.
For five years consecutively, the Boilermaker 15K Road Race has been named the largest 15K in the nation. Each year, the race attracts top elite runners from all over the world, Olympians and world record holders.
The Analytic Distance Runner has ranked the Boilermaker 15K Road Race as the most competitive 15K in the world. The race has been ranked number one for four consecutive years.
The Analytic Distance Runner shows the men’s Boilermaker field as the most competitive in the world for ’96, ’97, and ’98, and the women’s field as most competitive for ’97 and ’98.
I apologize for the possible off-topic Guys, but could you inform me which web host you are using right now I have a problem because my current web hosting company hostrator.com is kicking me off. They say that our website is using too many server resources. But our website only gets 200 visitors per week. Anyway, what would be your recommendations? Are you happy with your web hosting company? I am checking LCN at the moment, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space? I have contacted them and they say something like 2000gb disk drive costs only $50 per month, so if some day we will start running out of disk space we will simply add a new 1000GB drive so can continue updating.. What do you think about it? Any ideas and web host name suggestions are much appreciated.
I try to sit down at the computer once in a while and read what people write. Latley I have had a hard time finding authors that are producing content worth reading. This is not the case here. I enjoyed reading your content. I am going to make it a point to add you to my reader so I can make sure I stay on top of what you are writting.
Once again I find myself surfing the web looking for something good to read. Too bad I that I am having a hard to finding it. Not the case here. I like reading what you write and notice that you concentrate on a style that makes the reader want to stick around and see what else your going to put out.

Hi Steve
As a devout non athlete, you made a great throw away comment, that may have passed others by. You mention the benefit to the local community of having a race in their district.
It is easy when you see an international marathon or a large community race such as yours, to focus on just the race. There are a multitude of benefits to local businesses and community spirit from being involved, that last far longer than race day.

Hi Steve,
Great story and video about an important event for those involved and the residents and business owners in Utica.
Having lived in New York in the past I know how hot it gets in the summer. Yikes! I have always been in awe of great runners…or anyone who can run for any distance.
I am fairly athletic but I’ve never taken to running. Just never seemed to build up the stamina it takes.
Congratulations to those who participated.

Hi, Steve,
15k is very far too run. I could do a 3k but not a 15k. Here in NM we also have Fun Walks as well. They are the same distance as a run, but you can walk them. It beats all that running. There are no timed walks, just finish and you’re good.
Best Wishes,

This race sounds interesting Steve, I’m not surprised you get elite runners entering when the first prize is $10,000; – A nice way to make a living.
I think I have run 15k twice – (it’s quite an unusual distance). Normally you have 5 mile races, then 10k, then the next step is 10 miles. I can only think in miles, so 9 and a bit miles is unusual.
Have you never been tempted to run it yourself? Big, well supported local events like this are a great way to get into running. Be warned though, running is addictive, once you start it’s very difficult to stop. On the other hand, I can’t think of any reasons why you would want to stop?
Good luck with the 100 comment challenge Steve.

My running days are long gone (football or soccer as you call it in the US not long distance running), although my son runs marathons – I’ll have to sit down just thinking about it!
As an avid walker I once did a 33 miler, nowadays it’s more like 15 maximum.
Interesting name and history for the event.

First of all I wanted to mention that I’ve never been to New York (or the United States) but I am writing this blog comment wearing a t-shirt that says “New York” Bedford Avenue 1962!! LOL Hehe I don’t have a clue but wow! Isnt it a coincidence reading a blog post from a New Yorker blogger and I wearing (for the FIRST time) that t-shirt!
Anyway, let’s continue.
There are many people from Kenya that are very good runners. I am sure they get the $10,000 price every year!
Personally I am not a runner (perhaps running only in the gym
) but I have to “run now”. I have to read and comment on 30 more blog posts of the challenge!
Wish you all the best.
